Best Sublimation Printer 2022 – Cheap For Heat Transfer

Before heat transferring your printed design on your desired blanks, you need a sublimation printer that prints high-quality and smooth printing with perfect output results after transfer. Not all printers can be used for sublimation, you need some best sublimation printers that produce crisp colors on every type of blank.

When I was starting the sublimation business I used a variety of printers. But all in vain. Because I was unaware of the sublimation process and the printers that use piezo printing technology with sublimation ink. But after researching over the past 5 years, I can easily choose a good sublimation printer. For your needs on a daily basis, one of our listed dye-sub printers has auto cleaning head features to prevent clogging and banding issues.

Best Sublimation Printer 2022 – Cheap & Wide Format 13×19

If you’re gonna buy one of my listed sublimation printers, always purchase the best sublimation ink along with the printer with refillable ink cartridges. Because all the inks included in the packages are not sublimation inks. Secondly, never choose a printer for the sublimation of other brands like brothers, HP, and Canon because they are not made for sublimation. Except for Epson, sawgrass, and Ricoh.

Features

  • Multi-function All-in-one
  • Top-notch print quality
  • Wide-format borderless prints
  • Multi-purpose media tray
  • Auto duplexing with ADF

Starting with our wide format best sublimation machine is one of the ideals for those who wanted to start their business with less running costs. Though you can also use it on a commercial basis. The printer is all-in-one and provides copy, fax, printing, and auto-duplexing (ADF) at a time that extremely saves your time. Coming to its key features.

Easy Navigation: The wf 7720 is extremely easy to use via its 4.3 touchscreen LCD, you can command the printer as you want via LCD.

Precision Core Powered: The image quality is much improved because Precision core technology helps to print high-quality, fast printing, and dense images up to 40 million precise dots with the accuracy of ink. This is the reason why I (an artisan lover) love this printer.

Printing media: The wf 7720 sublimation printer prints borderless wide printing up to 13”x 19” with a high-resolution dpi of 4800 x 2400. Thus it prints such crisp and clear texts even though small texts look crystal clear.

Paper Capacity: The paper handling is versatile in wf 7720. From its paper capacity to its printing size, the printer is one step ahead. The paper handling capacity is 500 sheets with dual trays, a read feed tray for special paper handlings like envelopes and premium paper while the ADF capacity is 35 papers.

Printing Speed: The printing size for monochrome is 18ppm while the color printing speed is 10ppm a bit slow though. But keep in mind the printer is wide and all in one. While the monthly cycle of printing is 20,000 pages. Ready to go for higher sublimation business.

Connectivity & Compatibility: If we mention its connectivity, the printer is awesome. You can connect wifi, ethernet, and NFC. While the compatibility is immersive, You won’t regret the decision of buying. You will get Android, Apple, Special email print, and cloud print, even you can connect Amazon fire tablets with WF 7720.

Our Experience: In my opinion, I found this printer one of the best printers for sublimation. However, its printing results on every type of sublimation blank are pretty good. From scanning wide images to printing borderless prints the machine is superb. But the running cost was quite high because of the cartridges.

PROS

  • Saves 80% of power usage
  • Versatile networking
  • Easy to navigate
  • Highly reliable
  • High printing image quality
  • 4 ink cartridge with the package
  • Auto head cleaning
  • A3 to A4 paper handling

CONS

  • High running cost for a wide paper on a daily basis

Wf 7750 is also available with 5 ink cartridges. (The only main difference)

2. Epson Stylus C88+ – Best Classic Printer Sublimation Printer

Recommended

Epson Stylus C88

Features

  • Classic sleek durable body
  • Marvelous print quality
  • Print on multi-size papers
  • Remarkable printing speed
  • Borderless prints on different paper sizes
  • Ease to use of photo software

The Epson Stylus C88+ though a little bit old printer manufactured back in 2001. But its printing quality is wonderful in 2022. Why? Because the printer is a sleek, smooth, and smudge-resistant image producer like itself. But there is a lack of wireless connectivity, smart gadget compatibility, and LCD features because it is a classic printer for sublimation.

Print Quality: If you can compromise on the mentioned above features that I don’t admire then you don’t need to compromise on the printing quality. The printer produces an intensive resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi with borderless printing.

Operating System: Since no feature of LCD is present in the printer, you need to operate and give commands to the printer through the buttons on the top of the printer and they are easy to use.

Paper Handling and Speed: For monochrome, its printing speed is 23 ppm while for color printing, its speed is 14 ppm. Both speeds are more than wf 7720. But talking about its sheet capacity which is 120 only extremely low than 7720.

Connectivity and Compatibility: Both options are less in the printer. You can only connect the printer to your pc via USB, no option for android. While the printer only withstands windows, mac, and some other photo software for creating calendars and books.

Epson Stylus C88+

Ink Cartridges: Apart from all its cons, the printer has no exceptions in the printing quality. The printer has 5 individual ink cartridges. They provide smudge-resistant sublimation printing and documents for versatile printing.

Versatile Paper Printing: The sheet capacity is less but the printer’s paper printing types are wide. You can easily print cardstock, semi-glossy, matte, plain, photos, labels, envelopes, and many other papers. Astonishing feature!

Our Experience: Believe me! After using this printer for only high-resolution printing I found this printer awesome. But we’re living in 2022 so the lack of compatibility features and wireless connectivity irritated me. Because my thoughts are, that we’re living in a modern era so wireless connectivity is essential. However, you can buy this one for extreme high-class and clear sublimation printing.

PROS

  • Multiple 5 ink cartridges
  • Various types of paper printing
  • High dpi resolution for all kinds of sublimation
  • Fade resistant images
  • Software compatible
  • High PPM

CONS

  • Lack of LCD
  • Lack of compatibility options
  • Lack of wireless option

Featuring another sublimation printer of Epson that will prove itself one of the best sublimation printers with exceptional results. The predecessor of the WF 7720 printer is an all-in-one wide format printer and is also a top-rated inkjet printer on our list. Indeed, the printer is easy to use and is a versatile workshop printer that won’t disappoint an artist’s expectations. Let’s move to its key features!

Wide Format: The Epson WF-7710 produces borderless up to 13×19” prints via precision core technology similar to wf 7720. It can also scan, copy, and fax documents with ease. In addition the size of the scanning documents is 11×17”. Therefore, you can easily scan large images.

Crisp Images: The Photo quality of WF 7710 is a decent feature because it can produce excellent business graphic images. Also, the image quality on all types of sublimation blanks will be deep and accurate.

Vigorous Paper Handling And Speed: It features a single paper tray with the only capacity of 250 sheets and it can also handle 10 envelopes and 20 photo paper. Certainly, it can also handle 35 sheets of auto document feeder with auto-duplexing. For an industrial basis, the Epson 7710 has a heavy-duty monthly cycle of 20,000 pages. However, the printing speed is a little bit slow. For monochrome, it offers 8.7ppm with duplexing and 6ppm for colorful pages.

Connective Giant:  The WF 7710 is capable of connecting with PC, laptops, and smartphones via, NFC, Ethernet, and wifi. Along with Email print and Epson’s print apps can also be used with this printer. Also, you can use print from USB flash devices directly. Surprisingly, you can print your memories from the CD because it also features a CD-ROM. And I really know this is not the era of disc drives.

Our Experience: If we keep an eye on its ease of use, it won’t disappoint. I would suggest this printer to those who are good at pocket because the printer is extremely professional having a bit high running costs though it consumes only 20% of the power that is sufficient to run a handsome printing business. Recommended

Sawgrass SG500

Features

  • Sturdy construction
  • No need to convert into sublimation
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Built-in creative studio app
  • Easy to set up straight from buying
  • High Defined images

Sawgrass virtuoso printers are specially made for sublimation. You don’t need to convert them to sublimation as you convert Epson ET printers. You can kick start your business with this printer at a minimal cost and the running cost will be high due to its cartridges which are expensive. In the world of sublimation, after Ricoh printers, sawgrass is my priority.

Sublijet Ink: The sawgrass sg500 uses sublijet-HD ink cartridges manufactured by sawgrass containing 4 cartridges. You can choose between 2 ink kits when buying. One is a starter and the other one is standard.

Image quality: It produces vibrant color printing quickly and easily throughout its high-quality sublijet ink producing 4480×1200 DPI resolution images. The modulated dot technology produces small and precise dotted images to print dazzling images.

Creative Studio Design Software: For custom designs, you can touch new heights of sublimation with this printer. You can create your own designs with this free licensed software which was also included in its predecessor sg400. In addition, you can also use ready-to-use designs provided by creative studio software for up to 1 year free.

Compatibility and Connectivity: You connect sawgrass with smartphones, laptops, and PC through wireless or wired connectivity via the sawgrass print manager. You can visit and download it from sawgrassinks.com.

Display LCD: The Display is not touchscreen but you can navigate it via buttons on the right side of the printer.

Paper handling: The heavy-duty sub printer has an A4 paper 110 capacity of sublimation paper up to the size it can produce 8.5” x 14” that is enough to sublimate onto mugs, phone cases, and other sublimation blanks.

Our Experience: If I say Sawgrass sg500 is one of the best printers for sublimation then it will be 100% legit because it can maintain itself automatically. A good feature though for hassle-free printing. Along with that, it also included a 2-years limited warranty.

Paper Capacity and Speed: Its paper tray can handle 250 papers at a time while it has a special paper capacity for various kinds of paper. Other than that, 30 pages for ADF. In addition, the monthly cycle of printing is 33,000 pages.  A little bit slow in the printing speed but fair, the ppm speed of monochrome is 17 pages while 9 ppm for colorful.

Recommended

Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550

Features

  • Free cartridges with 6 ink tanks
  • A wide LCD touchscreen
  • Print directly on thick cards and Disc drives
  • Affordable to run Handsome Business
  • High-resolution scanner for color intensity
  • Print on thin vellum paper

Epson ET 8550 is the alternative to artisan 1430 which is an extremely high-end printer if we look at its printing results. But I don’t admire artisan 1430 due to the lack of advanced features. But when I used Epson eco tank 8550 I found I am getting a printer that is the wide format and has 6 Claria ink cartridges and many more advanced features at a lower price, the same features as artisan 1430 has but this one is laden more advanced features.

Print Field and Paper handling: With the impressive printing field size, this printer can print borderless images from 4×6” to 13×19” inches. Besides, the printer has 120 capacity of paper handling, the same as artisan 1430. 100 for plain paper and 20 for glossy papers and envelopes.

Other than that, thick paper handling is not a hassle for this printer because its front media slots can handle up to 1.5mm thickness. In addition, the printer has a wide flatbed scanner that can easily scan and copy multiple documents, saving your productive time. Besides that, the printer is a monster in the ppm. For colorful pages, the ppm is 12 and 16 for monochrome.

Image Quality: Epson ET 8550 print quality images tremendously. With the robust and excellent prints, it can print qualitative images up to 5760 x 1440 DPI resolution via micro piezo printing technology nearly every little aspect will be clear and vibrant with contrasting 6 color inks.

Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550

Despite being a high-resolution sublimation printer, we all printing enthusiasts are aware of that aspect. Sublimation is not possible without ink cartridges. But the eco-fit free ink cartridge system saves up to 80% of the normal ink that can print up to 6200 color pages (not sublimation). You can also fill the bottles with sublimation ink if you haven’t used this printer with any other ink.

Epson 8550 is one of the best printers for sublimation blanks I’ve ever found. I highly recommend this printer to get vivid and realistic professional photos at a minimal price than its predecessors. But the drawback is it lacks an auto document feeder.

Features

  • Equipped with Ecofit bottles
  • Saves 90% of the ink
  • Built-in copy and scan
  • Remarkable print quality
  • Voice over commands
  • Perfect for home and office

Featuring you another free ink cartridge system printer to renown your business to the next level. I call it a younger sibling of Epson’s ET- 4760. Both have many similarities but ET-4760 is one step ahead. Lack of touch screen display and faxing make this printer younger but more economical than Et- 4760. But if we compare other significant models at this price, indeed, the ET-3760 is worth the price and will prove itself perfect for sublimation.

Printing Media: Keeping an eye on its price, the printer can withstand precision core technology to offer you sharp and clear small texts. Besides, you will have robust paper handling of 250 sheet tray capacity of plain papers and 35 capacity of ADF along with manual duplexing. In addition, it has a 5000 pages monthly duty cycle.

Ink System: For usual printing, you will get a set of 4 ink refill bottles along with the package that is equivalent to printing 7500 monochrome pages and 6000 coloring pages. The ink tanks are easy to fill, with the combination of ET Claria black ink photo colors and graphics will be impressive.

Connectivity and Compatible Devices: The printer can be connected with pc, tablet, and laptop via USB, Ethernet, and wifi. Although it can also be connected with google cloud devices. Despite that, you can also use its voice-activated option and Epson’s print app for quick productive images.

Our Experience: I already mentioned in the above paragraph the printer lacks some of the tiny features. However, it has a 2.4” display which is not a touch screen but can be used via buttons on the control panel. Moreover, you can use the printer worry-free because of a 2 years warranty in the package. The printer is fit for those who are low at cost but I won’t suggest it to a professional level of business.

PROS

  • All in one printer
  • Hassle-free printing
  • Low running cost
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to refill
  • Voice activated printing

CONS

  • No touch screen

  • Fast print speed
  • 300 x 600 photo DPI
  • for glossy photo paper

DNP dye-sub photo printer is a beacon for those who own a photo printing shop or company. You can easily use this printer for event photography and for bulk printing in a shorter span. Kickstarting your sublimation business on an industrial basis with this printer will be an outstanding idea.

Power on/off: The printer can be switched from its back where the USB port is located. Though it’s a business printer. Unfortunately, there is a lack of physical control via LCD over the printer. But only 4 lights on the front indicate power, error ribbon, and paper.

Connectivity and Compatibility: Lack of Wifi and ethernet, you can only connect with USB because it is a business printer you won’t get many easy features. While it is compatible with Mac and Windows but lacks photo editing software.

Paper Roll: Instead of paper sheets, this printer uses paper rolls that are available in various sizes. It allows printing 4”x6” photos.

Ink Ribbon: Instead of ink cartridges compared to other Epson or sawgrass printers, this printer uses ink roller technology.

Our experience: If I talk about this printer, despite all its cons the printer is super speedy than other printers producing 20% faster images. With the highest resolution of 300 x 600 DPI. It can withstand both high-resolution and low-resolution images. However, I won’t suggest this printer to newbies because of the many hassles and complicated setup. The ink ribbon is not simply assembled as the ink cartridges. If you’re a beginner then stay away from this printer.

Never Buy The A Sublimation Printer Before Reading This Buyer Guide

If you’re gonna kick start your sublimation printing business then how’d you know which sublimation printer is the best out there? For your ease, I compiled a few key features of a good sublimation printer, if you want to keep your printing business hassle-free.

Best Sublimation Printer (1)
Infographic: Best Sublimation Printer

Compatible Printer:

First of all, you need a printer that is compatible with the sublimation process. Not all brands manufacture sublimation printers except Epson, Sawgrass, Ricoh, and Roland. I always use Epson and Sawgrass effortlessly.

They are more affordable than Ricoh and Roland. On the other hand, brands like HP, Brother, and Canon printers cannot be used for sublimation keep in mind! Why? Because they don’t have a piezo printing head that is useful for sublimation.

Printing Material:

As we know, sublimation can be printed on various sublimation blanks via heat transfer. For example, you can sublimate on t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, leather pouches, ceramic plates, acrylic, wood, polyester, metal, and much more sublimation blanks available out there. Always choose a sublimation printer that is versatile in printing.

Cartridges:

As a printing enthusiast, I know sublimation is not possible without ink cartridges. Although Epson’s printers have advanced technology throughout, we can sublimate without ink cartridges. I would suggest a free ink cartridge to those who are extremely low on a budget.

Because ink cartridges are expensive though. If you’re good at a budget I would suggest WF 7720, 7710, and ET 8550. In addition, if you want a  low running cost then  ET-16650 is the best cartridge free.

Vigorous Resolution:

Another key feature is resolution. Printers that print the high resolution up to 5760 x 1440 DPI are one of the best sublimation printers with stunning results. However, 4800×1200 is also good. Our listed printers have high resolution with borderless prints.

Quality of Output Results:

Output colors are essential when it comes to printing. Always avoid a printer that produces low-quality images. Some printers even cause lines and banding issues while sublimating and you can also notice ghost imaging issues. The printer must not bleed extensive colors hence a good output color printer will print crystal clear and professional photos.

The printer which produces the prints with micro piezo technology can offer you dense and durable designs until the material won’t be torn out.

Compatibility Via Connectivity:

If the printer has vast options of connectivity like wifi, Ethernet, NFC, and USB then you will be able to connect your devices with ease. Other than that, the printer must be able to connect with other wide print apps. Google Cloud, flash memory devices, IOS, and Android inclusion are superior options. Moreover, the convenience of fax, scanning, and copying with duplexing will be up to the best standard.

Ink quality and Paper Handling:

When it comes to ink, always use high-quality sublimation ink with the printer. Not all inks can be used for sublimation. While paper handling varies from printer to printer. Some may have the rear tray capacity of 250 and even some will have 100 you can choose according to your needs. However, the inclusion of special papers like envelopes, glossy papers, and cardstock is a bonus.

Which is Best: Sawgrass Vs Epson

Sublimation printers can be used via heat transfers to print onto the various blanks. Both renowned brands manufacture sublimation printers. But there are core differences between them and you must know which is best.

Sawgrass is the printer that we don’t need to convert into a sublimation printer and they are specially manufactured for sublimation. However, Epson printers are versatile and can be used for various tasks.

If your business is specifically of sublimation then I recommend sawgrass printers. They are expensive and have a quite high running cost. While Epson printers are affordable they can be used for multi-purpose.

Another fact is you cannot use the current running Epson printer that you have already. You can only convert Epson’s “Ecotank” printers into sublimations that are brand new. Because current running Epson printers will have a usual ink into the lines that cause the damage to the printer and incorrect output results. So you need to fill the sublimation ink in the brand new cartridges.

How Does the Sublimation Process Work?

Sublimation printing can be done by using a special paper called sublimation paper, sublimation ink, a sublimation printer, and a heat transfer machine. First of all, a design is printed onto a sublimation paper.

The ink that is heated using a heat transfer completely turns from a solid to a gaseous state using a heat press machine. This way the sublimation ink led down onto the pores of fabric or material and hence completely sat up into the material permanently after turning into solid.

It is similar to how the tattoo process works. The heat is applied to the ink and as a result pores of the fabric open and the ink converts from solid to gas after drying.

The sublimation process is durable and fade-resistant. It is said that sublimation transfers are 40 times more durable than direct upper layers of heat transfers. The fabric would be torn out but the design would still remain there.

How to Prepare a Printer for Sublimation?

  1. Unbox the printer (I am using wf 7720)
  2. Unbox sublimation inks
  3. Put on gloves
  4. Remove the old ink cartridges from the printer and add refillable sublimation cartridges
  5. Fill the specific syringe with the sublimation ink
  6. Insert the syringe onto the top of the cartridge by flipping the blue cover
  7. Slowly tilt down the syringe to release the ink until the cartridge will be full
  8. Measure the ink level
  9. When the process is done cover the ink tanks
  10. Put the ink cartridges by replacing old ink cartridges
  11. Use separate syringes for each color
  12. You’re good to go!

FAQs

Can I sublimate on the dark colors and cotton?

No! You cannot directly sublimate onto dark colors and cotton. However, sawgrass and silhouette cameos may do this possible. But still, you will need White glitter HTV to apply before sublimating. Because White glitter HTV has polyester. Secondly, you need to bleach the black fabric in order to do sublimation. You can read my full guide here.

Which printer is best for sublimation: Inkjet or laser?

I always use Inkjet printers because they provide superior and more realistic image results than laser printers. However, another fact is laser printers do use ink toners and in the sublimation process, we need to work with ink cartridges with the piezo print heads.

How can I refill the ink cartridges with sublimation ink?

Ink cartridges or the set of inks that come with the packages are not sublimation inks or refillable cartridges. If your printer is brand new you can easily install the refillable ink cartridges. However, if you want to convert an old printer into sublimation then you need to remove old ink cartridges after that, you can install new refillable ink cartridges.

But keep in mind, when you convert an old printer you need to clean the printhead and pipes in order to remove the old ink.

What paper format is best for sublimation?

The recommended gsm is 110 to 120. Because it’s easy to get the sublimation paper damped due to high humidity. Once the paper is damped the stiffness would go down and you won’t be able to print smoothly.

Why are my sublimation printer printing lines?

Clean the printhead! It is called banding. It causes when the dust occurs in the printhead or ink dried up. However, in the above list, one of my selected printers has an electronic self-cleaning printhead. You can choose one of them.
